3/12/2020 - ANNOUNCEMENT
Dear friends and families of Toddler + Preschool Music with Amber Darland -
The health and safety of our community is my highest priority.
As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to spread throughout our state and country and is beginning to hit Whatcom County, I am feeling it is time to make the tough call to cancel current classes until further notice. Earlier this week, the Whatcom Health Department announced that it is recommending residents avoid unnecessary gatherings of 10+ people. As of today, our state schools are also closed until April 24th. My family is choosing to self quarantine until health officials lift current recommendations to practice social distancing. We are anticipating 6-8 weeks before we start easing back into some sort of sense of normalcy. I'm open to this not being the case, but preparing for the long haul. Strange times we are living in indeed.
While many of us may not be personally concerned about getting sick, recommendations to self-quarantine come with the understanding that if we begin to limit social interactions NOW, BEFORE we start seeing an explosion of cases of COVID-19 - we can drastically slow down this pandemic. The actions we take now will determine how deeply this virus effects our families and the greater community. Furthermore, it will have a direct impact on how effectively our medical system can respond to this virus and to those who need care in the coming weeks. I don’t know about you, but in a time of so much uncertainty, it feels good to have some guidance on what I can do NOW to help protect our elders and the immunocompromised folks in our community as well as alleviate pressure on our health care system. If you are needing more information about why it is essential that we do our part to slow down this virus, I found this article to be very helpful: https://www.statnews.com/2020/03/11/flattening-curve-coronavirus/
As a musician-teacher-small business owner, I do not take cancelling classes lightly. It is difficult for me to stop business, not just because it disrupts routine or will significantly impact my family's monthly income, but because I LOVE my job and all my families (I'm seriously going to miss your amazing kiddos).
For those of you currently enrolled in this session - some of you have been asking whether or not I will be offering make up classes or reimbursement to account for these missed weeks. My intention is to go LIVE on Facebook and Instagram in the coming days to offer interactive online classes and that can fulfill the remainder of the classes for this session. I recognize that this is not the same as meeting in person and hope that you will understand that offering make up classes for 50+ families is not only difficult logistically - but would severely impact the income that I rely on to support my family. That being said, I know many of you will also be impacted financially during this pandemic and to forfeit these classes may feel like extra salt on the wound. If online classes don't work for you - or if you are experiencing hardship, please don't hesitate to reach out to me and we will work something out. We are all in this together.
Lastly, I just want to reiterate how incredibly grateful I am for your support. Along with so many other artists and freelance workers, I'm going to have to get creative in order to stay employed during this time of social distancing. If you are able, please meet me online in the coming days as opportunities will arise (ie - online concerts, beginning ukulele classes, toddler+preschool music sessions) for you to enjoy music with me from afar and maybe throw a donation my way.
Thanks friends. I'm confident that we will adapt to this uncertainty with grace and greater compassion for all. I look forward to emerging with you all later this spring as a more creative and strengthened community. Stay well and give those kiddos a big squeeze for me!
